Singapore University Games 2007

7th September 2007, Bukit Batok CSC, One-Day Event, Blue Polo-Tee...

Once again, its our annual Singapore University Games 2007. This year's tournament format about the same just that they had a team event instead of the selfish singles...oooppss..

Anyway, this year we had one of the toughest competition inter-universitically. Stars-studded teams blazed the lanes of Bukit Batok CSC on the 7th September 2007.

We had a slow start (Uncle Adam said) and wasted some chances to be on the podium. SIM dominated in the doubles event as well as the singles...

Going into the 2nd block of games, having the mee goreng n fried rice n bee hoon, they proved to be effective as our guys got back to our winning ways wif guys being 2nd for team n girls securing a silver n bronze in the quartets. Lionel chionged back to capture the bronze medal in the singles event!!! Ho seh la!!!

It was a good outing n we were determined not to reproduce the results last year with the ahem, suay tee-shirt. Many thanks to the entire team who made it all possible! Let us train hard n *piak*(slapz) the other teams in upcoming events!

1ST ASIAN UNI-PHILIPPINES!!!

Almost one month has passed since the eventful conclusion of the 1st Asian University Championships held at Makati City, Philippines. Well, I guess those of us who went for the trip had been frantically trying to catch up with school work that we missed over the 5 days we were away from school (hmmm, or is it just because exams are nearing, lol) so much so that we haven’t had the chance to enter our experience here! So here I am…

The experience has been one of enrichment, fun, excitement and certainly of exposure for all of us, be it to our foreign counterpart’s culture, to the competitiveness of the game and definitely to our own team members! Hmmm, did anyone know that both Raymond and Phyllis are both excellent Pianists? Ooh, the sound of music resounding through the lobby without fail every morning. And Jorwe actually enjoys playing those Arcade Kiddy ball games? Or that all of us are just plain foto-wh*res… O well, enlightenment…

The first day we touched down, we were warmly greeted by the Captain of the Ateneo University Bowling Team Captain, TJ Yusun who also happens to be our friendliest and responsible tour guide cum driver. Hmmm, not to forget other interesting characters from the university such as Xiao Ku Ku as affectionately addressed by Cam, and certainly, Ian (the one who longs for Clar’s protection when he comes over to Singapore).

Arhz, when will I ever get down to the proper issue at hand! Lolz, as I was saying, after we arrived at the Manila Airport, we next proceeded on to Best Western Astor Hotel, a small hotel a while away from our bowling venue. Well, apparently its much better than the one in shah alam, as we heard from the seniors. Next up was the practice throw session at Powerbowl (the bowling alley) at Powerplant Mall, Rockwell. It must have been the most tiring practice session, considering the fact that we shifted lane by lane, over 24 lanes, for 5 min interval throws at each time and for what purpose, still remains largely unknown. Well, having thrown the first shot, we realized the lanes at Powerbowl is of great deviance from the ones we have in Singapore. The ball goes long, yet the reaction and comeback (prol due to the extremely clean back-ends) is immensely strong, in a sense, opening up quite a big area of play. Technical stuff’s so boring, arhz, more bout the shopping mall for now. Woo..

The shopping mall is very much similar to Taka or Paragon? Hahz similar in terms of their prices, but one thing for sure, Filipinos sure love the sound of the piano. They practically have Grand pianos at every other corner and prominent location. Ah wth, and food there is so much cheaper. Imagine a plate of spaghetti costing just S$1? Tt’s Jollibee for you, little wonder y Mac’s isn’t gaining ground there. All in all, we visited Italian, Jap restaurants, Corny Dogs, Victoria’s Shop etc etc… and every meal cost us an average of only S$10-15, and mind you, each meal left us all full n gorged.

Anyway anyway, some more on the bowling aspect of the trip… Having experienced the lane conditions during the practice session and with advice from Uncle Adam, everyone of us went prepared the next day for the first event of the competition. Performance was not bad but I shall not go into the details as its gonna take quite long to describe. However, throughout the whole span of the competition, the amount of knowledge and experience gained certainly amounted to a whole big load… For example, what to do if ur seemingly perfect shot starts leaving the corner pins? (hmm, it cld be that the ball is reacting too strongly on the backend, and hence a sharper entry thus failure to carry the pins) Or sometimes ur seemingly perfect shot, one that even bystanders or Uncle Adam would look with disbelief, starts leaving the same pin OVER n OVER again… its juz sway-ness… All of us can attest to it, Cam, Jasc esp.. hahaz… To sum it up, the bowling competition has indeed benefited all of us who went, having learnt so much and getting to know new friends from the other uniz.

Hmmm, some memorable events…

1) Glorietta
Left to while away 4 hours in a shopping centre, what can 4 guys do? Arhz well, they do the most unexpected things like go bowling in the arcade (some super strong guy happened to ram the small ball right into the display board of the game and it dropped down, right Raymond?), challenging the basketball machine (and hell, do we suck at it) and of coz we gotta mention our dearest Jorwe’s favourite game; Feed the Clown. And all of these to exchange for 4 cutest n prettiest hair-bands for our 4 beloved female team-mates… Oh, and pls ask ‘Man’ his experience at the massage parlour, Rest n Relax… hoho…

2) Best Astor Western (10th March)
Last Nite! Hahahaz and the wildest nite we had! Wooo… all from a bottle of Vodka Citron and the game called ‘Ring of Fire’. Within half an hour, 7 of ur was high, and 1 KO-ed. Hahaz, lets not mention whu’s that but yea… Aniwae, we din stop at one bottle, we walked over to 7-11 the next hr and got ourselves another bottle of Bacardi… hahaz I shall leave the rest as sweet memories and for ur imagination…

On an ending note, (this has taken far too much time) this trip has been a great and fantastic break away from the monotony of school and certainly provided the best experience for our parting seniors as well as us the unknowing freshies. Lets not get emo here, but its indeed sad to have to sae good bye to our seniors whu have brought so much fun, laughter, joy and certainly, they whu have brought NTU bowling team to where we are todae. Arghz, lets save this fer another time…

Signing off,
Whoosh…

Hello everyone! Have visited this blog a couple of times, but always to read and not contribute. So thought I'd write some stuff too. With my “not-so-happening” lifestyle, I ain't got much to share with all of you, but I am gonna do a little write-up on my Asian Games experience. So here goes...

Well, as most of you know, the 15th Asian Games was held in Doha, Qatar. It is definitely one of the best experiences of my life, not just travelling to the Middle East, but to compete at such an elite level. Having been to Qatar before, I was quite familiar with the culture and environment of the country. What I wasn't aware of, was that it could get quite cold at that time of the year. Guess I wasn't a fantastic Geog student.

It was a 16-day trip for the bowling team, and we arrived in Doha just one day before the opening ceremony. Everything was well organized, and we were swiftly and smoothly escorted to the Games Village. The Games Village houses the entire sporting contingent of all the countries participating at the Games. So you can easily imagine how huge the place is. And trusting the Arabs to do us a favour, the Singapore contingent was allocated the housing blocks furthest away from the Village entrance! This meant a 25-minute brisk walk in the chilly weather everyday!

The food at the Village wasn't exactly very appetizing, and having to take our meals there for 16 days was hell. I'm so surprised I didn't get diabetes or salt overdose while in Doha.

After settling down, we immediately set off for the bowling center to get our equipment registered for official practice. Dragging 7 bowling balls up and down everyday is no joke! Thankfully, we had physiotherapists from SSC with us in Doha, to attend to our stiff and aching backs after bowling. Being an oil-rich country, the Arabs were really generous. The lanes were flooded with oil! Never in my bowling career have I had to struggle with such lane conditions. Day 1 of the competition was uneventful, with all of us struggling on the long-oil pattern.

However, being famous for our abilities on the short-oil pattern, we got really fired-up on Day 2. Besides Val and Mich bagging the doubles gold, the entire team bowled really well during that event. Day 3 and 4 continued to be joyous for us, as Remy and co. brought home the silver for the Trios event.

But the highlight for the competition was the Team event. It is during the Team event that you see every athlete, regardless of country, fighting his heart out to bring glory to his country. The atmosphere was so intense. As usual, struggling on long-oil, the team slipped to 9th place after the 1st block, and we trailed the leading team by 300 pins! How ridiculous could we have bowled! Nevertheless, we fought back on the short-oil, and by the last game, we were in the hunt for a silver or bronze medal. It all went down to the last frame, when Remy had to double for the bronze. Unfortunately, he got the 1st strike, but only a 7-pin count on the second shot. It's impossible to describe how each of us felt at that point in time. We lost the medal by 3 pins! 3 pins! How suay can we get right. We were speechless, and just sat there crying our hearts out. It was really a heart-breaking moment for the team, having worked so hard to lose by a mere 3 pins.

Anyway, thinking back on the event, it really made me a more mature bowler. I've learnt to handle pressure situations better, and learnt to work together as a team with individuals totally different from myself. Also, it may look kinda cool on TV when we strike home to win the match. But in reality, it ain't that cool. It takes a lot of confidence and courage to step up to make the difference.

Not trying to preach, but from a team mate's point of view, I think we've got a real solid team bowling for NTU. The attitude and commitment is there from all of you. But if we really want to bowl well and win, we need to step forward and accept criticism and remarks on our game, to bring it to the next level. Team isn't about any individual, it's about everyone working together. So, having said so much, enjoy each and every training session, and try to come back from training having accomplished self-set targets. That's one way to improve. Anyway, for those who haven't fallen asleep reading this, thanks for taking the time to read, and see you all real soon at NUS open!

The ang pows and festive goodies are back once again. I wonder how many of us have to STILL help out in spring cleaning. Or spring cleaning only involves your own room? After going through packing my room like at least 5 times since the end of last semester exams. I'm sad to say that i'm just those pack-already-room-still messy-type. so i just stuff all my junks in a box. =X

Are we gonna have anything to do for the upcoming new year? *ponders*
Last year we had steam boat at teresa's place and a gambling session at vic's place. So this year...
*sits my lazy ass down while waiting for others to plan stuff* * evil grin*

And besides. Why isn't anyone else blogging? Perhaps I'm the only 1 with 1 pathetic module left so I'm too free everyday =/. Other than mugging for the up and coming quizzes, please... there's more to life than just studying our ass out. GPA's the probable motivation. Unlike the old birds where the only motivation is to not dabao-get out of school in 4 years/3 years for some-try to get at least 2nd class honours. Meanwhile, happy cleaning, cramming thoughts for what to do for valentine's day and happy bowling~ =D

tonight was the 2nd time i saw our dear captain Jorwe on tv~!!` hoho.
even though it was a mere 10 seconds scene and almost couldn't see his face at all, was quite amused by it. how did i spot him then???
without a doubt, credit goes to his infamous one-liner:

警察! 临检! 快把身份证拿出来!

:D

well, if you've missed him in action and would like to see if our 队长 is any better on-screen, please tune in tomorrow night, 7pm, channel 8 for the show 荧火虫的梦.
he will appear within the first 3 minutes! muaha.

Nope, i've no problem waking up for 8.30 classes heh. Coz i've only got 1 module. But anyways, since our yaohui has tried to canvass for more maple players. I'll just intro another game dofus @ www.dofus.com

Dofus is a french game with an international server, so there are many foreign players. No stupid kids like those in maple. Cannot ks(kill-steal) you nor come and "disturb" you while you're training. But similar to other MMORPG games, you can have pvp wars be it 1 vs 1 or guild vs guild. There's 12 different classes to choose from and 2 different classes of people you can be the "brakmas" or "bontarians" being the "evil" or "good" side. This is more of a tactical/strategy game where you've to consider your playing style and plan your skill points (skill points is quite similar to jin yong, another chinese game), plan for your equipment, and similar to maple, there's many different monsters to kill. Basically it's similar to many other online games in the past with all the different elements of different games. Just that it has cuter graphics and all..

Well, just another alternative to dota-ing, WoW, maple, and wadever online games there are out there... =)

MapLe, MaHjoNg n MaN UtD
School started for 2 weeks le.. Anyone having problems waking up for 8.30am classes? I am one of those who find it difficult to pull myself out of bed early in the morning. To those w/o early lessons, dun hao lian!! haha!! Cant blame me as i have long nights of studying*(ya rite)..

The start of the semester has brought my mahjong to a stop. Hope my good buddies 大三元,大四喜 n 十三么 will understand..Friends Forever!! *bLinKz* But at least i still got one entertainment: introducing the revolutionary "MapleStory" (ta-dahh!)!

Reasons why u shld take up this game:
1. Get to make more/new friends
2. Fun and easy to play
3. Improve your bargaining skills
4. A no-need-money type of "chill-out" place
5. Fulfill your dream of becoming a millionaire (in the game of cuz)
6. Disturb xiao ginnas (small kids)
7. Can play by yourself..No need find khakis..
8. Interesting items and creative ideas
and many more...
So hurry down and grab yours today!

Firstly, d/l game client from www.maplesea.com. Next, create an a/c, following instructions given and lastly log-in and create a character. Easy rite? But the downloading depends on your comp and connection speed. Good luck to those using pentium 2 with 28.8kpbs! Those still using the legendary '486', i suggest downloading 'Super Mario' instead..

How to play? Using your keyboard, which u can allocate the keys, u move the character about, killing monsters to earn money, also known as hunting. With the money, u can buy weapons n clothings that u can upgrade by using scrolls on them. Successfully upgraded items can be godly n u can sell them in the free market at high prices! That's where your bargaining power comes in. This game is friendly as u cant kill people and no bloody scenes (rated: PG). I admit its kind of boring trying to level up a character for the sake of killing monsters but this game allows u to enjoy its graphics and the interaction with other ppl. More information visit the website or can contact Angee (super laojiao) or Charlie (quite laojiao). Tempted?

Well, Liverpool just done Man Utd a favour by crushing favourites Chelsea 2-0 in an all-even match on Sat. Yey!! Star-studded team != Fantastic results..For the Liverpool fans, remember, You Will Never Walk Alone!

Guys n gals, try to keep the blog going! See you guys next training! Til then, mug hard have a great week ahead!

P.S. "She Sells Seashells on the Seashore" Who is 'She' selling seashells? Summore sell on the seashore? Can make money meh?

Some 1st with NTU Bowlers in 06/07
1st Bowling Outing......

The first outing was straight after one of the trainings. About 16 bowlers went Marina Square for lunch @ Swensens and Kbox session . That was also the first time i got to hear some of new bowlers sing. Some juniors can really sing well manz...but as usual someone zao sia~haha

1st Chiong Night......

Finally went to chiong @ Zouk with Kenn, John, Jas, Vic, Clarence, Kevin, Suen, Anli and Mel during the 1st night of the chalet. That place was damn crowded. Luckily, we have the usual chiongsters to bring us around the place or else confirm lost. Danced and bua-ed on other people for the whole night. We had prata supper at about 4am before heading back to chalet. It was a great experience for night life especially for people like John, Anli, Mel and Me etc who seldom chiong...haha (vic can finally stop nagging to go chiong with her haha~)

1st Bowling booth of the Year......

It was Sports exposé 2007 and we had our 1st bowling booth in this new year. Really glad to see many bowlers coming to the booth and giving their support in promoting bowling in NTU. We had fun manning and playing stupid games at the booth. haha......

till then, look out for my next blog entry....damn interesting!!!haha.....see you guys on Saturday's training.....

I have to say Victoria is quite a good organiser....last min organise an outing still managed to get 7 people to the Minds Cafe @ Boat Quay yesterday.....Since angee has blogged about the whole outing, I shall introduce one of the games that we played at the cafe......This game- Snortal is explained by Jascelyn as usual....(She seems to know alot of games!)
Let me explained how this game is played. This party game where everyone is an animal....or at least sounds like one. Each player chooses the sound of a typical farm animal and players quickly flip over cards, tougue-tied players stumble and stutter to blurt out the animal sounds of the other players. Before long, the "barnyard" will be filled with bales of laughter....

7 of us chose the respective animals- Jas(mouse), Vic(sheep), John(Dog), Raymond(Duck), Angee(Owl), Me(Snake) and Clarence(Donkey). This game can really freeze~ our brains from functioning manz....it's really hard to remember each other's animal especially when all the animals are shifted to the left. We had alot of fun teasing at each other so for future trainings, if anyone hear any animal sounds, you will know what's going on haha..

Anyway I have applied for the membership of Minds Cafe so we can hang out there more often and try out on the games....let me know if anyone need to rent any games from there....too bad tag 6 is not for rent...so i guess i have to make one soon...haha~

It has been a long day for me....training, tuition, shopping, supper....damn shagged....Hope you guys have enjoyed 2007 1st bowling training! School starting on Monday....maybe we can meet up in sch or hall for some activities...haha maybe @ HuiHeng's Kafe at Hall 13 k? .....cyaz...

Bowling King

Hey ppl, this is weiheng here... Training today was tiring after a 2 weeks rest, but some knowledge gained. haha... Also, i'm here to introduce to u all a comic named Bowling king...

i guess some of u may have read it b4 cos it's quite an old comic series le, but it's quite funny and enjoyable due to it's bowling content and context, with lame jokes that leave u ROFL... haha... just to let u guys noe that i've this comic series (21 installments), so whoever is interested, just let me noe la...
School is starting le, so damn sad that i didn get any elective of my choice lor. this sem seems weird, almost everyone didn get a single elective (Wat's happening??!).

Night out at Minds

I shall do jorwe a favour since i skipped training. Woke up at 9am. but felt too tired to drive down for training. Thus decided to crawl back to my comfy bed.

If there's gonna be training at like 10am the next time. I guess i won't be heading out till like 3am with them. Old liao. Cannot tahan T.T

So the 7 of us met up at minds and stayed there till 3am unknowningly

with jorwe being the same since i knew him from his (十六连拍 days)

one of his many poses

vic looking rather "lost"

i realise vic has many funny expressions, and this was one of the many. couldn't really remember whad was going on but just snapped the picture down coz she looked kinda lost/faraway amidst the very noisy cafe.

then jasc went "why you all stir so fast (me with the kiwi and jorwe with the mango). I haven take picture yet ley" (opps..)

jorwe counting the tag6 scores while jasc proceeded to deal the cards. Raymond was very cautious while playing. Vic was the silent player going "oh shite" whenever she "tio cheng" While i'm the po heng suay kinda player. John was just plain suay and the it seemed that at some point of time our main aim was to 害 raymond. mwahahaha

anyway the day ended with this fella being the saboteur. Every round that we played, he's the bad guy. -_- 奸诈狡猾的家伙!

*jorwe, my entry loooonnngggg enuff le ma? ^^

Yo..this is Anli speaking.. I'm asked to blog by Jorwe so...i shall try...coz i suck at blogging...
Well...erh..i dun really noe wat to say.. haha. hmmm...ok....

Firstly, a very big HI to everyone reading this. And also a big thank you to all the team mates whom I have spent my past 1 year bowling in NTU with.
Hmmm....Bowling with u guys have been quite fun. All the stupid IQ games(open-close etc etc) and all the Lame lame questions kept training very interesting somehow. Shah alam was great also...though we were cheated big time but well...we get to laugh at Jorwe's TAO HUA there. haha.

To the seniors leaving: Its been great bowling with u guys though the time wasn't very long but still damn great. Thanks for everything!

To everyone else: Lets continue bowling hard!

P.S: told u i suck at words. haha. till then...ciaoz..

** Happy New Year Everyone **

2006 has been one of the greatest year i had in the bowling team.
i had alot of funn training with the teammates i've known for at least 2 yrs, getting to know more about some through the malaysia trip, and not forgetting the cheery bunch of freshies.

as some of you had mentioned, the outings to mind's, late-night-supper-in-the-crazy-weather etc. has indeed contributed alot to my fond memories. hence i'd like to make use of this post to jot down bits and pieces of year 2006 in my days as a ntu bowler.

chalet @ aranda [march]
who? what? huh?

i'm sure almost everyone knows what i'm babbling about. haa.
it was then that this game was first introduced.
to top the hilarity off, we had chivas and baileys as forfeit. biggest loser? ask raymond. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

shopping trip @ BKK [july]
my first overseas trip with just friends!

did we win anything? haa. i dun remember.
having funn is all that matters! celebrated xiuyun's bday too~

i lovee uncle adam more after the trip! cos he bought cheese macoroni for me. muahaa.
most memorable thing abt this trip gotta be me waking up at the time we were supposed to meet to board the coach and me answering victoria's phone call with "what the f*ck!" haa.
too excited the night before, couldnt sleep till 4am. end up couldnt even hear my alarm. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
